Route 62 is the historical route which was the main link between Port Elizabeth, the Garden Route and Cape Town before the N2 highway was built.

Montagu lies nestled between two mountains. It’s crystal clear air is free of any pollution. It is strategically situated between the Garden Route and Cape Town, offering a most picturesque drive.
The weather is perfect …far enough South to escape the heat of the Klein Karoo; far enough North to get away from the long wet winters of the Cape. In winter, the days are warm and sunny, with the occasional hint of rainfall. Autumn brings on a kaleidoscope of colours. As for October, there isn’t a place that can compare to beauty and the abundance of the roses.
Montagu is host to less than ten thousand inhabitants, with a variety of entrepreneurs, hoteliers, a cabinetmaker, a cheese maker, a teddy bear maker, restaurants, and artists.
The area offers a rich history. The most interesting museums being the Montagu Museum, Joubert House ( the oldest local house / residence), the British fort and the natural gardens in town.
The Robertson / Ashton / Montagu wine route is known throughout South Africa. It has some of the most well known wine farms being Van Loveren, Graham Beck, Zandvliet and Weltevrede.
There are a variety of foot paths to choose from. Lover’s Walk being ideal for an early morning stroll, especially with tortoises, dassies, guiniefowl, Egyptian geese and the odd baboon or small buck that shows itself.
Montagu also have some excellent places to do rock climbing.
Niel Burger’s tractor ride to the summit of the Langeberg, and the optional “potjiekos” is a must.
Then there are the famous hot springs, situated less than 3kms outside of town at the Avalon Springs. Those who suffer ailments such as arthritis, rheumatism find the warm waters most beneficial.
After a delicious meal in the Wild Apricot Restaurant, which offers a choice of traditional and continental dishes, our residents pub, The Dog and Trumpet, is where pre-dinner drinks and after dinner night caps are served until late.
Our qualified therapists offer a range of healing massage therapies and beauty treatments. The centre also boasts a steam room and mineral tub. Water for this tub comes from an artesian well, 120 meter below ground level, and has high mineral qualities. The hotel is pet friendly* and offers the ideal weekend breakaway for Capetonians as well as a convenient halfway stop-over between Cape Town and the Garden Route.
The uniqueness of our Health Center lies in the healing mineral water, which is to be found in Montagu. The water used in our “Mineral Bath” pushes from 120 meters under the ground to the surface at a temperature of 26° Celsius. It is then heated to be used in our bath, which is hygienically cleaned after each usage. Users of our bath claims especially relief of arthritic pains and other ailments of joints.
