Guest comments, places of interests in San Francisco and more.

The Phoenix Hotel is a landmark, celebrating over two decades of being San Francisco's world-renowned "rock 'n roll hotel." Funky, irreverent, and young-at-heart, The Phoenix isn't for everyone.

It's at the edge of the gritty Tenderloin neighborhood. Its central courtyard is a true crossroads for the creative - a good place to check out visiting artists and entertainers, and a bit noisy at times. Even so, San Francisco's Phoenix has some of the most loyal guests in the world.

This mid-century motor lodge features 44 spacious guestrooms surrounding a lush central courtyard. The casual décor draws on the vibrant colors and textures of the tropics to accent the original bungalow design of the rooms.

Each guestroom features a phone with voice mail, dataport, free Wi-Fi service, cable TV, hair dryer, iron and board, electronic lock, jalousie windows and most rooms have ceiling fans. Our three Deluxe King rooms and three suites also have refrigerators, microwaves and coffeemakers. San Francisco's Phoenix Hotel is a non-smoking hotel.

Funky, irreverent, and young-at-heart, The Phoenix Hotel caters to touring bands and travelers with a creative spirit. A 44 room mid-century motor lodge with a lush courtyard and heated outdoor pool. It's an oasis in the heart of San Francisco on the edge of the gritty Tenderloin and three blocks from City Hall. Guests get complimentary onsite parking and a poolside continental breakfast. Art from local artists decorates the rooms and the courtyard gardens.

A former 1950s caravan lodge, now transformed into an urban oasis. The elliptical pool has references to Warhol in the shallow end and Duchamp in the deep, while hanging poolside are the stars and rock 'n' rollers who favour this no-tell motel.

How many hotels can claim that Keanu Reeves, Joan Jett, Vincent Gallo and Little Richard have graced their mattresses (no, silly, not all at the same time!)? How many San Francisco hotels are the crash pad and launching pad for world-renowned bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Psychedelic Furs and Pearl Jam; and up-and-comers like The Killers, Bloc Party and The Shins? With so much creative energy swirling around you never know who might be strumming a guitar, posing for a photo shoot or just kicking back by the pool.

If you'd like to tell your friends back home that you stayed in the same hotel as Linda Ronstadt, David Bowie, Keanu Reeves, Moby, Franz Ferdinand, and Interpol, this is the place to go. On the fringes of San Francisco's less-than-pleasant Tenderloin District, which is rife with the homeless and crack addicts, this well-sheltered retro 1950s-style hotel is a gathering place for visiting rock musicians, writers, and filmmakers who crave a dose of Southern California -- hence the palm trees and pastel colors. The focal point of the Palm Springs-style hotel is a small, heated outdoor pool adorned with a mural by artist Francis Forlenza and ensconced in a modern-sculpture garden.

The rooms are more pop than plush, with bright island-inspired furnishings and original local art; every room faces the pool. In addition to the usual amenities, the hotel offers movies on request and a party vibe that's not part of the package at most city hotels. Some big bonuses: free parking and the hotel's restaurant and club, the groovy and very hip Bambuddha Lounge (tel. 415/885-5088), which serves Southeast Asian cuisine with cocktail-lounge flair. If you want luxury and quiet, stay elsewhere, but if you're looking for a great scene and fun vibe, head to the Phoenix.

The Phoenix Hotel is centrally located within walking distance to San Francisco's most celebrated clubs and performance halls, including Great American Music Hall, the Warfield, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, the Opera House, Golden Gate Theater, and the Orpheum Theater. The Asian Art Museum and government buildings and courthouses of the Civic Center are less than three blocks from the hotel. Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Union Square and the Financial District are a short ten-minute drive away.
